Saini Bhawan Seminar Calls for Collective Efforts to Promote the Punjabi Language
A Punjabi language seminar was organized on 4 July 2026 at Saini Bhawan, Rupnagar by the Kaka Ram Saini Charitable Trust to promote and preserve the Punjabi mother tongue. The seminar began with a welcome address by Balbir Singh Saini, Secretary of Saini Bhawan. Dr. Ajmer Singh Tambar highlighted the importance of the Punjabi language and urged people to register Punjabi as their mother tongue in the national census. The chief speaker, Prof. Sukhdev Singh Sirsa, General Secretary of the All-India Progressive Writers' Association, spoke about the historical challenges faced by the Punjabi language. He explained that Punjabi did not receive its rightful official status during the Mughal and British periods. He emphasized that Punjabi is a rich and complete language and that a language is not merely a means of communication but also the carrier of a region's culture and identity. He appealed to all Punjabis to work together to preserve and promote their mother tongue. Several distinguished writers, poets, and social leaders also addressed the gathering. They stressed the need to end discrimination against the Punjabi language and encourage its use in education, administration, and daily life. Poets presented inspiring poems dedicated to Punjabi, which were warmly appreciated by the audience. Saini Bhawan President Rajinder Singh Nannuan suggested developing a single standardized Punjabi computer keyboard, similar to English, to overcome the difficulties caused by multiple Punjabi fonts and keyboard layouts. The seminar concluded with a vote of thanks to all the speakers, guests, organizers, and participants. The event conveyed a strong message that the Punjabi language can flourish only through the collective efforts of its speakers and by giving it the respect and importance it deserves.
Punjabi never received official status first under Persian and later under Urdu. According to the speakers, Punjabi is a complete and rich language. A language is not merely a means of communication; it also preserves the culture of a region. Therefore, all Punjabis must remain vigilant to protect their mother tongue, especially because large corporate groups, using their financial influence, often prefer promoting a single language instead of supporting linguistic diversity. The seminar was addressed by renowned writer and poet Shaminder Singh Bhakumajra from the Puadh region, Principal Bahadur Singh Gosal, President of the Rupnagar Writers' Association, Suresh Bhiora, Advocate, Davinder Jatana, Trustee of Saini Bhawan and an international speaker, along with noted writers Yatinder Mahal. All the speakers strongly emphasized ending discrimination against the Punjabi language at various levels. On this occasion, Tajinder Chopra, founder-director of Balle Balle Films and Records, presented a passionate poem dedicated to the Punjabi language, which was warmly appreciated by the audience. Poets Jagtar Jog and Manjit Barnalvi also recited their poems. Ram Kumar Mukari, Chairman, Punjab State Saini Welfare Board appreciated the management of Saini Bhawan for organizing the Punjabi seminar.
